Dress rehearsal

The dress rehearsal was meant to test the newly fitted AAZ engine and put the whole electrical system through its paces. It was the first time all the components were in use together.

The route was fairly long: from Berlin via Stralsund to Hamburg. The tour was supposed to take four days.

On Thursday morning, only about 20 km after setting off, a pulley broke. It had needed adjusting, because the power steering belt wasn't lined up with the power steering pump. We were towed, and the problem was fairly easy to fix: apparently the wrong pulley had been fitted to the JX engine from the start. A power steering pulley was quickly found and fitted. The next day we were off.

Everything went well. The electrics didn't work as planned, though: the inverter, as it turned out later, had a factory defect, so we couldn't charge from the CEE hook-up socket. The charging booster didn't work either – again, as it turned out afterwards, because the battery hadn't been set correctly as a LiFePO4 battery on the booster. So at night I had to wire the three phases coming from the CEE socket onto the installed RCD and circuit breaker and straight to the Schuko socket, just to run the 230 V fan heater and get a bit of warmth at 2 °C outside.

The parking heater didn't run because the battery was too weak, or too flat.

Apart from that, the engine ran brilliantly. Over the 1,000 km it used almost no oil (<100 ml), which is great compared with the old engine. It has noticeably more power, and fuel consumption of 10 l / 100 km is fine.

There was a certain rattle coming from the gearshift linkage, so afterwards I replaced the whole gear lever mounting. Now shifting is easier too, and the rattle has gone. Other annoying rattles from furniture or metal parts were cured with Armaflex tape.
